Thierry Breton, the Commissioner for Internal Market of the European Union, said on Monday that the 27-country bloc intends to further semiconductor collaboration with Japan.
"We believe that it's extremely important to secure the supply chain of semiconductors," Breton told Reuters at an event in Japan.
The two geographies will work together to monitor the semiconductor supply chain, which became an issue during the pandemic, and exchange research and engineers, Breton added.

In May, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met with executives from some of the world's largest semiconductor companies in an effort to boost cooperation for the industry and restructure its domestic industry.
Japan is looking to Rapidus, which has partnered with IBM ( NYSE: IBM ), to continuing building chip plants int he country to boost domestic production. Newly created Rapidus is being seen as a competitor to Taiwan Semiconductor ( TSM ) in the global foundry market.
