JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU) is set to offer its flight attendants a USD1,000 bonus if they don’t call out from work beginning Friday through the end of May, as it strives to secure staffing levels throughout a boost in travel demand. Flight attendants will also be given a USD100 bonus for taking on open trips, said a company message, which was sent to staff members Friday.
The incentive comes just days after the airline made a USD3.6 billion all-cash offer to acquire carrier Spirit Airlines.
Amid continuous staff shortages, airlines have suffered the consequences, specifically during Covid peaks. The additional bonus is intended to demonstrate airlines’ willingness to pay more for workers to pick up extra shifts as a means to avoid flight disruptions.
“The spring rewards programs comes at a time where every flight makes a difference as hours are tight and staffing levels are not where they need to be,” Ed Baklor, JetBlue’s head of customer care and programs, said in the memo.
JetBlue has yet to comment on the matter.
