Lithium is a rare metal that is the backbone to almost all current batteries. Batteries have been around for decades, but electric vehicles ("EVs") are the most recent cause for the surge in demand for lithium ion batteries. This recent surge in demand has caused lithium miners to up their game and deliver higher amounts of lithium than they ever have before. While this initially caused lithium's price to skyrocket, because the supply failed to meet the new-found demand, the price was brought back down as production began to meet, and then exceed, the demand.
