OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company backed in part by Microsoft ( NASDAQ: MSFT ), said on Thursday that it had added support for third-party integration for ChatGPT, its wildly popular generative AI chatbot.
OpenAI said the support for application programming interfaces, or APIs, is starting with a "small set of users" and then will be gradually rolled out on a larger scale as the company learns more.
The Sam Altman-led OpenAI said the first plugins for ChatGPT were created across several industries, including ones from Expedia ( EXPE ), OpenTable, Wolfram Alpha, Booking.com's ( BKNG ) Kayak, Salesforce's ( CRM ) Slack, Shopify ( SHOP ) and several others.
ChatGPT took the world by storm late last year and has ushered in an era of increased focus and attention on the technology, with Nvidia ( NVDA ) CEO Jensen Huang recently saying , "The iPhone moment of AI has started."
In January, Microsoft ( MSFT ) announced a "multibillion, multi-year" investment into OpenAI and has been integrating the technology into several of its products, including its Azure cloud service , Bing search engine and Edge web browser, Office software and most recently, its GitHub developer tools.
Microsoft ( MSFT ) and Google ( GOOG ) ( GOOGL ) have been battling for attention in AI supremacy, with Google releasing its Bard chatbot, a competitor to ChatGPT, to the public earlier this week .
OpenAI temporarily disabled the history feature on ChatGPT earlier this week after some users reported seeing other users’ conversations .
