The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister ofAgriculture and Agri-Food today concluded a successful mission toIndia where she took part in the G20 Agriculture Ministers' Meetingand met with her international counterparts, senior officials, andCanadian and Indian agriculture stakeholders.
Throughout her participation at the G20 AgricultureMinisters' meeting, Minister Bibeau reaffirmed Canada's commitment toremain a reliable source of safe, high-quality agri-food products tothe world, and shared Canada's views on the importance of achievingmore sustainable, resilient and inclusive agri-food systems. Shecongratulated India on their G20 presidency and facilitating importantdialogues and also committed to strengthening the bilateralrelationship with this vital partner in the Indo-Pacific. MinisterBibeau joined other delegates in condemning Russia's illegal,unjustifiable and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, and reaffirmedCanada's commitment to working with our close trade partners tocoordinate responses to the impact of war on global food security andmarket stability.
At the G20, Minister Bibeau met bilaterally with herIndian counterpart, Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare ofIndia, Narendra Singh Tomar. During the meeting, Minister Bibeaureiterated Canada's commitment to working with India to enhance ouragricultural partnership and to collaboratively address broaderissues, such as global food security and climate change. MinisterBibeau expressed her optimism in achieving a successful tradeagreement that will help both countries meet evolving market needs andgrow and diversify their high-quality agricultural and food products.Minister Bibeau also conducted a series of bilateral meetings anddiscussions with the United Kingdom, Japan, Vietnam, the United ArabEmirates and several others.
During her outreach in India, Minister Bibeau visitedan Ag Tech start-up that is led and managed by over 700 farmers.During her visit, they discussed Canadian company Clean Seed Capital'sSMART seeder technology. The company has been conducting field trialsin the State of Punjab and the State of Haryana, with new seedingtechnology that could bring a paradigm shift to farming in Indiathrough innovation. Minister Bibeau also met with a range ofagricultural stakeholders hosted by the Confederation of IndianIndustry – Food and Agriculture Centre of Excellence to discusschallenges and opportunities for Canadian agriculture and agri-foodexports. She also met bilaterally with Indian Minister of AnimalHusbandry, and Dairying, Parshottam Rupala, and Minister of ConsumerAffairs and Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, to promote Canada'shigh-quality agriculture products and discuss the ways the twocountries can cooperate on trade, research and advancing each other'smarket access priorities and ensuring market predictability.
To conclude her mission to India, Minister Bibeauvisited McCain Foods India, where she learned more about how thisCanadian company engages in research and development of the frozenfood market in India and the countries of the subcontinent. Shefinally visited Heads Up For Tails, a pet supply store that recentlystarted importing Canadian petfood products.
