Volkswagen ( OTCPK:VWAGY ) was hit with a significant recall notice by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Tuesday.
According to the notice, 2018-2021 Atlas and 2020 Atlas Cross Sport vehicles have a potential defect in the passenger detection system that could result in the passenger airbag failing to deploy.
“The passenger occupant detection system (PODS) may experience a fault in the wiring and deactivate the front passenger air bag when the seat is occupied,” the notice explained. “Owners are advised not to use the front passenger seat until the remedy has been completed.”
A remedy is “currently under development” according to the NHTSA. Owners are due to be notified before the end of May. Volkswagen will also update owners once a solution to the problem has been identified.
A total of 143,053 in the United States are potentially impacted by the recall.
