Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny ( NYSE: DIS ) didn't pop any eyes at the box office, but largely delivered expected ticket numbers over the weekend leading up to the U.S. Independence Day holiday.
The fifth Indy film scored $60M in grosses over three days in about 4,600 theaters, according to Comscore, a bit below hopes for $65M, and definitely not an upside surprise.
The new movie added another $70M internationally for a worldwide total of $130M, and it opened No. 1 in a number of key markets, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, Australia and Argentina, Comscore added.
IMAX ( NYSE: IMAX ) said the big-platform movie drew $11M in its theaters worldwide, of $15M total. (Domestically IMAX saw $6M in Indy dollars, with $5M internationally.)
Indiana Jones was well ahead of the box-office leftovers, including No. 2 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ( NYSE: SONY ), with $11.5M. That fifth-week movie has reached a cumulative total of $339.9M domestically, and over the weekend did better than some other modest performers: No. 3 Elemental ( DIS ), with $11.3M; No. 4 No Hard Feelings ( SONY ), with $7.5M in its second weekend; No. 5 Transformers: Rise of the Beasts ( PARA ) ( PARAA ), with $7M; and the opening at No. 6 of Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken ( CMCSA ), which hit just $5.2M.
The Flash ( NASDAQ: WBD ) suffered another vertiginous week-to-week drop in tickets -- fizzling another 67% to just $5M in its third week (still in more than 2,700 theaters), and only the eighth-best performer of the weekend. It still had yet to surpass $100M in domestic box office.
Indy gets one more weekend more or less to himself before the opening Wednesday, July 12 of Mission: Impossible -- Dead Reckoning Part I ( PARA ) ( PARAA ).
Cinema tickers on the shortened Monday trading session: AMC Entertainment ( AMC ) +0.9% ; Cineworld ( OTCPK:CNNWQ ); Cinemark ( CNK ) +0.4% ; ( IMAX ); Marcus ( MCS ) +0.9% ; Reading International ( RDI ) +2.6% ; Cineplex ( CGX:CA ); National CineMedia ( NCMI ) -2.8% .
