Apple ( NASDAQ: AAPL ) is slated to release its next iPhone later this year and a widely watched analyst believes the newest edition of the smartphone will have a wide camera with a 48MP sensor.
In a blog post, TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the CMOS image sensor, or CIS, will have 48MP and use a new "stacked" design.
Sony ( NYSE: SONY ), the maker of the CIS, has been able to boost production capacity to meet Apple's ( AAPL ) demand, "resulting in a significant reduction in high-end CIS supply for Android."
In addition, Kuo said that the key driver for CIS growth in the long-term appears to be visualization applications related to artificial intelligence.
"The most visible application at this stage is self-driving cars, and the next most likely is robotics," Kuo added.
Apple ( AAPL ) shares were fractionally higher in early trading on Wednesday while Sony ( SONY ) was fractionally lower.
