The Athletic , a subscription-based sports-focused publication under the New York Times banner will lay off about 4% of its journalistic staff, according to its parent.
The New York Times ( NYSE: NYT ) said that 4% of staff at the outlet amounts to about 20 reporters. The staff reduction comes as the publication shifts from granular coverage of every team toward broader beats that will require fewer reporters.
Philadelphia 76ers beat writer Rich Hoffman, Cincinnati Bengals beat writer Jay Morrison, Cavaliers beat writer Kelsey Russo, and Indiana-focused columnist Bob Kravitz tweeted that they were among those laid off.
The New York Times ( NYT ) bought The Athletic for $550M in early 2022.
