A first edition iPhone from 2007 has sold at auction for a record $190,372.80 U.S.
The iPhone in question is a first-generation model that had 4GB of storage capacity and was unopened in its original box.
A mint condition 4GB first-generation iPhone in its original packaging is widely considered to be the “Holy Grail” of products among Apple enthusiast and collectors.
The iPhone sold at nearly 400 times its original price, and, at one point, had nearly 30 collectors bidding on it at the same time.
LCG Auctions, which sold off the iPhone, advertised the device as an “exceedingly rare, factory sealed, first-release 4GB model in exceptional condition.”
Originally selling for $599 U.S., the first-generation iPhone was expected to sell for about $50,000 U.S. during the auction but ended up smashing all previous sales records.
First released in 2007, Apple made the decision to discontinue the 4GB iPhone model just two months after it was launched due to weak sales, making it an even rarer product in the Apple universe.
Much more popular among consumers was the 8GB iPhone, which was launched at the same time in 2007 and gave users double the storage capacity for an additional $100.
%Apple () stock has risen 28% over the last 12 months to trade at $193.73 U.S. per share.
