Marathon Petroleum ( NYSE: MPC ) said Tuesday the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating last week's fire at its Galveston Bay, Texas, refinery that left one worker dead.
While confirming OSHA's probe, the company offered no information on market speculation that a gasoline production unit was damaged by the fire and could be offline for an extended period, according to the Oil Price Information Service.
In a filing with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Marathon Petroleum ( MPC ) said Galveston Bay's Ultraformer Unit No. 3, the larger of the refinery's two reformers, was involved in the fire; a reformer upgrades heavy naphtha into gasoline blendstock by raising its octane.
