Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) Dean and Chancellor William Owen, MD, FACP, recently announced the appointment of Dr. Rhonda McIntyre-Francis, MBBS, FAAP, FRCP(C), as the Associate Dean of Medical Sciences effective September 1.
Dr. McIntyre is well-versed in all aspects of RUSM, having served in various leadership roles throughout her 21-year career at RUSM. Prior to her current roles as Campus Dean for the St. Kitts Satellite Campus and Director of the RUSM HEART Training Centre, she held the following positions: Director of Health Services, Director of the International Health Program, Director of the Advanced Introduction to Clinical Medicine PMH program, Professor of Pediatrics, and Clerkship Preceptor.
“Under her leadership, Dr. McIntyre displayed steadfast dedication to academic excellence and built a strong and united campus community,” said Dr. Owen. “Her priority remains our students, championing scholarly excellence, community engagement, volunteer efforts, and launching innovative best practices for experiential learning. Dr. McIntyre is a remarkably capable steward to lead our university’s medical sciences campus.”
As Associate Dean of Medical Sciences, Dr. McIntyre will partner closely with Dr. Owen and RUSM’s Cabinet, campus Department Chairs, and faculty. They collectively will maintain RUSM’s focus on maintaining successful student outcomes and community engagement.
"I look forward to building on our rich and sustaining legacy in medical education with a commitment to providing opportunities for our students to serve as good stewards in the community via physician-training and medical advocacy programs. These initiatives help prepare our students to become well-rounded leaders in the medical profession with a global perspective on patient care," said Dr. McIntyre.
Dr. McIntyre attended medical school at The University of the West Indies. She completed her pediatric residency at BC Children’s Hospital at University of British Columbia in Vancouver. After residency, she was a practicing pediatrician in Canada, before returning to her hometown in Dominica. Thereafter, she continued as a practicing pediatrician before taking the position of Head of Pediatrics at Princess Margaret Hospital and eventually joining RUSM in 1997 as a clinical preceptor in Pediatrics. Dr. McIntyre is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and board certified in Pediatrics.
Moreover, Dr. Owen said, "In turn, I am deeply grateful to our former Senior Associate Dean of Medical Sciences, Dr. Stan White for his strong leadership and positive contributions to RUSM over the past four years.”
As RUSM prepares to relocate to a new permanent medical science campus in Barbados in January 2019, Dr. McIntyre will initially be based at RUSM’s temporary Knoxville campus. Dr. White will serve as the Satellite Campus Dean for the St. Kitts Campus.
In addition to the changes to the leadership of the medical science campus, additional leadership appointments were recently announced. These include but are not limited to:
- Seeth Vivek, MD, DLFAPA, who joined RUSM as Chair of Psychiatry in January 2018, has been appointed Assistant Dean of Clinical Sciences, effective July 1. He will also continue as Chair of Psychiatry. Dr. Vivek has spent many years in academia, including creating a major postgraduate training program in psychiatry in New York. He is an officer in his state’s medical specialty society and is a recognized scholar in medical education.
- Pranaya Mishra, PharmD, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, has assumed the additional role of Academic Chief of Staff, effective August 1. As Academic Chief of Staff, Dr. Mishra will work closely with Dr. Owen and senior academic leaders on several major university initiatives.
