Sempra's ( NYSE: SRE ) Southern California Gas said Tuesday it has filed an application with the California Public Utilities Commission for the development of a pilot project that would utilize organic waste such as chipped wood with nut shells and turn it into renewable natural gas.
SoCalGas said the project would be California's largest RNG project, producing as much as 4.5B cf/year of fuel from 400K-500K tons of agricultural waste, some of which would otherwise be burned.
The project would be developed by San Joaquin Renewables LLC in the city of McFarland; SoCalGas has proposed funding its ~$13M portion of the project with cap-and-trade funds.
If approved, which could come as soon as May 2024, SoCalGas said the project is planned to come online in late 2026.
