Reports say that Sony ( NYSE:SONY ) is thinking about building a new plant in Japan to make image sensors for smartphones, possibly as soon as 2024.
The Japanese electronics behemoth, which is involved in everything from televisions to movies to video game consoles, might spend billions of dollars on the new plant, which could begin making image sensor chips as early as 2025.

Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple ( NASDAQ:AAPL ), is currently on a tour of Japan. He recently said on Twitter that the company’s partnership with Sony (SONY) led to “the world’s leading camera sensors for the iPhone.” Sony stock ( NYSE:SONY ) fell more than 3% to $78.80 at midday on Thursday.

Sony-Microsoft agreement
Microsoft has said that it offered Sony a 10-year deal so that Call of Duty could be played on the Japanese company’s PlayStation console. Someone who knows about the negotiations but doesn’t want to be named because the talks are private declined to be named. The proposal, which Sony hasn’t accepted, also includes rights to sell the game on the PlayStation Plus program, which allows players access to a library of titles for a monthly subscription.
