Southern Co. ( NYSE: SO ) -1.7% in Thursday's trading after the company edged past Q4 adjusted earnings estimates but delayed its in-service date for the Voglte nuclear unit 3 to May or June.
Q4 net loss narrowed to $87M, or a loss of $0.08/share, compared with a loss of $215M, or a loss of $0.20/share, in the year-earlier quarter, and Q4 operating revenues rose to $7B from $5.8B a year ago.
The utility said it will take pre-tax charges of $183M for Q4 and $920M for FY 2022 for estimated probable losses on Georgia Power Company's construction of Plant Vogtle Units 3 and 4.
An "extremely frigid Christmas weekend" due to winter storm Elliott pushed electric demand to nearly 38K MW, CEO Thomas Fanning said.
The company also said it was helped by an increase in the number of customers, which partially offset higher non-fuel operations and maintenance costs.
Southern ( SO ) shares have lost nearly 9% so far this year while gaining 1% during the past year .
