Over 100 plant workers at a Tyson Foods ( NYSE: TSN ) factory in Arkansas went on strike on Monday ahead of the planned closure of the plant.
The strike will see about 150 workers protest on Monday at a Van Buren, Arkansas plant. The plant is due to be shuttered on May 12, eliminating nearly 1,000 jobs. Venceremos, a labor organizer advocating for the poultry workers in Arkansas tweeted the crux of the complaints.
“Hey @TysonFoods, why are you giving corporate employees and supervisors a severance package but frontline workers in Van Buren get nothing? Why are you refusing to pay out vacation time in full? We have questions and we stand with workers!,” the group tweeted. “Tyson workers in Van Buren, AR are on strike! Their plant is closing next month and they want a fair severance package, full payout of accrued vacation time, and accountability in workers' comp claims. That's the bare minimum @TysonFoods - so what's the problem?”
Tyson has offered to transfer plant workers to another facility in Texas, but the offer has been met with a tepid response. Tyson has restructured its chicken plant operations in recent months to streamline the business and cut costs, which includes the closure of the Van Buren plant as well as a Virginia facility .
