Total active drilling rigs in the U.S. fell for the eighth week in a row, down by 5 to 682, Baker Hughes reported Friday in its latest weekly survey .
The total rig count came in more than 9% below the 753 rigs reported at the same time last year.
Drilling rigs targeting crude oil in the U.S. fell by 6 to 546, while gas rigs were unchanged at 130 and 6 rigs were classified as miscellaneous.
Rigs targeting oil in the Permian Basin fell by 2 to 335 while oil rigs in the Eagle Ford stayed flat at 59.
