Total active drilling rigs in the U.S. fell by 4 to 749, Baker Hughes said in its latest weekly survey , declining for the third week in a row for the first time since August.
Drilling rigs targeting crude oil in the U.S. tumbled by 8 to 592, while gas rigs rose by 3 to 154 and 3 rigs are classified as miscellaneous.
The total rig count is 15% higher than at the same time last year, although the percentage has been slipping for several weeks.
Rigs targeting oil in the Permian Basin fell by 3 to 345.
