Uber (NYSE: UBER) revealed that it is no longer mandatory for its drivers or riders to wear masks. The movie comes after a federal judge dismissed the Biden administration’s mask mandate for both airplanes and other public transportation. Several airlines immediately implemented the new policy changes.
“The CDC order requiring masks while using rideshare platforms such as Uber is no longer in effect, and we’ve revised our COVID-19 mask and front-seat policies accordingly,” Uber wrote in emails to users on Tuesday.
“However, the CDC still recommends wearing a mask if you have certain personal risk factors and/or high transmission levels in your area,” the company said in an updated safety guidance found on its website.
Nevertheless, the company asks that passengers avoid using the front seats unless they are traveling in a large group that requires them to do so. Mask may still be required by law in certain jurisdictions, Uber noted, and within those areas, local regulations will apply.
“If you ever feel uncomfortable, you can always cancel the trip ,” Uber said in the release.
“Many people may still feel safer wearing a mask because of personal or family health situations, so please be respectful of their preferences,” the rideshare company’s email told customers.
