In an announcement celebrating the inaugural graduating class of its Aviate pilot academy, United Airlines ( NASDAQ: UAL ) outlined aggressive hiring plans for coming years.
According to the airline, 51 students graduated from the academy in 2022, a small step towards its plan to train 5,000 new pilots by 2030.The school is intended to supplement the supply of pilots for the airline.
The carrier noted its laser focus on hiring in the past year, bringing 2,400 pilots onboard during 2022. The airline intends to hire an additional 2,500 by year-end 2023 and a total of “at least 10,000 pilots” by 2030.
“United is leading the industry in the training, recruitment and hiring of the next generation of talented commercial pilots and the progress we've made at United Aviate Academy after just one year is another example of an airline where good leads the way,” CEO Scott Kirby commented.
