Vale ( NYSE: VALE ) and Wabtec ( NYSE: WAB ) said Thursday they are forming a partnership to advance the decarbonization of rail operations with the goal of eliminating emissions through the use of battery power and alternative fuels.
As part of the deal, Vale ( VALE ) will order three of Wabtec's ( WAB ) FLXdrive battery locomotives and collaborate to test ammonia as a potential clean, alternative fuel to replace diesel.
The three 100% battery-powered locomotives will be used on the Carajás Railroad, which runs the world's largest iron ore train, comprised of 330 railcars transporting 45K tons.
Upon delivery, anticipated in 2026, the FLXdrives will join the diesel locomotives to form Brazil's first hybrid railway.
The companies estimate the FLXdrive locomotives will save 25M liters/year of diesel, which would reduce carbon emissions by ~63K tons, the equivalent annual emissions of 14K passenger cars.
The companies also said they will work together on a study to use ammonia as a clean alternative fuel.
