Company Overview
I continue my research of the forest industry with Boise Cascade ( BCC ), one of the largest manufacturers of plywood and engineered wood products in North America. In addition to the 11 plywood plants, 5 EWP facilities, and 2 sawmills included in its Wood Products segment, BCC also operates a network of 39 distribution centers across the continental United States. The two business lines are vertically integrated to a degree I had not seen in the industry before, and this is one of BCC's most important and durable competitive advantages. To gain a better understanding of the overall impact of vertical integration within the forest industry, I would like to draw some parallels between Boise Cascade and the Timberland REITs I have previously covered. As Michael Porter discussed in his famous book 'Competitive Strategy,' vertical integration can often improve bargaining power with clients and suppliers, thereby translating into enhanced profitability and returns on invested capital....
