UPRO: Use Leverage To Reduce Risk, Here's How

The S&P 500 ( SPY ) has detached from its all-time highs reached only a few days ago and is now trading 4% below peak levels (see chart below). The catalyst for the quick pullback may have been the Middle East crisis. But underneath the surface, other factors probably contributed to risk asset investors (even long-term treasuries ( TLT ) ( VGLT ) and gold ( GLD ) have also sunk 4% or 5% since the start of March) rushing to the exits:

• Stubborn inflation .
• Weakness in key job metrics .
• Pessimism about the direction of interest rates .
• Crude oil and the US dollar dominating the safe-haven trade.
• Richly valued stocks .
