Quebec's Abitibi greenstone belt remains one of the most productive gold regions on the planet, having yielded over 100 million ounces since the early 1900s. With gold prices holding near record levels, junior explorers controlling strategic land positions along prolific fault structures are drawing renewed investor attention—particularly those with existing infrastructure that could accelerate development timelines and reduce capital requirements.
Shares of Cartier Resources Inc. ( TSX-V: ECR ) ( OTCPK: ECRFF ) are climbing Wednesday after the company filed an updated NI 43-101 compliant mineral resource estimate for its 100%-owned Cadillac Project in Val-d'Or, Quebec. The updated estimate shows a 48% increase in inferred gold ounces compared to the 2023 preliminary economic assessment.
The Cadillac Project now contains 767,800 ounces of gold in the measured and indicated categories at a grade of 2.40 g/t Au, representing a 7% increase over the prior estimate. Inferred resources grew substantially to 2,416,900 ounces at 2.14 g/t Au. Total resources span approximately 45 million tonnes across multiple gold sectors.
The resource estimate incorporates approximately 110,000 metres of drilling completed by Cartier from 2016 to 2024, along with 420,000 metres of historical drilling by previous operators. The updated estimate was independently prepared by PLR Resources Inc. and Evomine.
Notably, 25% of total resources now sit in the higher-confidence measured and indicated categories, including 502,600 ounces classified as measured—a key milestone for de-risking the project's development profile. The resource base offers flexible development pathways, with 12% of ounces pit-constrained and 88% amenable to underground extraction.
The project benefits from substantial legacy infrastructure, including a 920-metre shaft, 500-metre ramp, and 7 kilometres of underground drifts. These existing assets could significantly reduce future capital requirements and allow management to adapt development strategies as the project advances.
Gold mineralization extends over 9 kilometres along the Cadillac and Héva Fault Zones, covering roughly two-thirds of a 15-kilometre prospective corridor. The remaining 6 kilometres of strike length offers additional exploration upside. The company has also outlined a conceptual exploration target of 600,000 to 1,100,000 additional ounces, highlighting potential for further resource growth.
The flagship Main Sector—comprising the historic Chimo Mine, East Chimo, and West Nordeau deposits—hosts 87% of total resources within a 3-kilometre mineralized trend that remains open at depth and along strike.
Covering 14,000 hectares along the Cadillac Fault, the project represents one of the largest consolidated land packages in the Val-d'Or camp, with road access, year-round infrastructure, and proximity to existing milling capacity.
Shares of ECR are ahead 5.2% at C$0.305. Shares of ECRFF are down 6.5% at $0.2245.
