Summary

  • The Virtus Dividend, Interest & Premium Strategy Fund offers a high 10.30% yield by investing in dividend-paying stocks, bonds, and writing call options.
  • The fund's unique strategy aims for stable net asset value and income, though it underperformed the S&P 500 recently.
  • The fund's portfolio does not include the Mag-7 or other highly valued tech plays, so it could help a lot with diversification.
  • Despite its high yield, the fund's net asset value is down year-to-date, raising concerns about the sustainability of its distribution.
  • Trading at a 9.69% discount to NAV, the fund is relatively cheap compared to peers, but may offer better entry points with mean reversion.

The Virtus Dividend, Interest & Premium Strategy Fund ( NFJ ) is a closed-end fund that employs a somewhat unique strategy to provide its shareholders with a very high level of current income. In short, this fund is a hybrid fund that invests in both common stocks and fixed income securities. This alone is not particularly unusual, as there are a number of hybrid funds on the market that do this. The thing that sets this fund apart from many of its peers is that it also writes call options against the common equities that it holds in its portfolio. Thus, this fund is essentially a cross between an option-income fund like the Eaton Vance Enhanced Equity Income Fund ( EOI ) and a bond fund. This is an interesting strategy that, if properly executed, should actually allow the fund to maintain a fairly stable net asset value over time while still providing a respectable level of income. After all, the option-writing strategy would likely limit its upside while providing income, and it could switch into bonds during recessions or market panics. As we can see here, this is indeed the case, as the fund’s net asset value per share has been rangebound between $12.09 and $15.23 over the past three years:
