StandardAero shines as sole bargain in soaring defense sector after Iran escalation
2026-03-03 11:32:35 ET
Defense stocks have surged over the past few days as the escalating conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran has pushed investors toward names seen as direct beneficiaries of higher military spending....
Shares across the aerospace and defense complex have jumped as markets quickly repriced the likelihood of larger procurement budgets, accelerated replenishment of munitions, and increased demand for advanced systems tied to air defense, missiles, drones, and intelligence.
This move fits a familiar pattern in which defense equities act as a partial hedge during periods of acute geopolitical risk.
Sector-wide performance has been particularly strong in key exchange-traded funds. The State Street SPDR S&P Aerospace & Defense ETF ( XAR ) is up 17.3% year-to-date, the iShares US Aerospace & Defense ETF ( ITA ) has climbed 13.5%, while the Invesco Aerospace & Defense ETF ( PPA ) has gained 15.6%.
Against this backdrop of strong price momentum, valuation has become a key differentiator within the group. Looking across the aerospace and defense universe, only one company currently holds an A-grade valuation: StandardAero ( SARO ), which screens as meaningfully more attractive on a value basis than its peers.
In this framework, an A Grade denotes strong valuation appeal with compelling pricing relative to fundamentals.
Analysts point out that this kind of snap-back in defense stocks during geopolitical shocks is not unusual. Historically, periods of military escalation draw in investors seeking both safety and upside from higher expected defense outlays, even if the immediate earnings impact can take time to filter through.
However, many strategists caution that sustained outperformance will depend on whether current tensions are followed by concrete increases in defense budgets, multiyear procurement programs, and new modernization initiatives rather than short-lived market reactions to news flow.
