As geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions push nations to rethink where critical technologies are sourced, aerospace companies are increasingly prioritizing domestic production and partnerships. For unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), reliable, high-performance batteries are not only mission-critical but also a matter of national security, particularly for surveillance and defense applications in remote or hostile environments.

Shares of Volatus Aerospace Inc. ( OTCQB: TAKOF ) ( TSX-V: FLT ) are climbing Tuesday after the company announced a Letter of Intent (LOI) with VoltaXplore Inc., a Canadian lithium-ion battery manufacturer and subsidiary of NanoXplore Inc. (TSX: GRA) (OTCQX: NNXPF) . The agreement secures a domestic supply of advanced, silicon-dominant battery cells to power Volatus’ next-generation drones.

The partnership is designed to enhance supply chain security, product differentiation, and technological independence for Volatus, while also providing VoltaXplore with access to a new aerospace market vertical. Volatus highlighted that Canadian-made batteries will improve drone endurance, reduce charging times, and strengthen cold-weather performance—key factors for missions ranging from civil infrastructure monitoring to Arctic surveillance.

For VoltaXplore, the deal expands beyond its established markets in electric mobility and energy storage. Backed by NanoXplore’s graphene expertise, VoltaXplore will leverage its Montréal facility to deliver high-performance battery cells engineered and manufactured entirely in Canada.

Executives from both companies underscored the strategic importance of the agreement. Volatus CEO Glen Lynch emphasized the benefits of securing a fully Canadian value chain, while NanoXplore CEO Dr. Soroush Nazarpour noted the milestone of bringing graphene-enhanced battery technology into aerospace applications.

The collaboration aligns with the Government of Canada’s push to strengthen industrial capabilities in aerospace, defense, and critical minerals, while also supporting job creation and domestic innovation. Initial production for Volatus is expected from VoltaXplore’s 1 MWh Montréal facility, with additional expansion planned alongside Volatus’s upcoming drone platforms.

U.S.-listed TAKOF shares have risen 7.6% to $0.459, while shares of FLT are up 5.8% at $0.635 on the TSX Venture Exchange in Tuesday morning trading.
