SkyWire(TM) Technology From Microchip Makes It Easier to Align and Compare Clocks Within Nanoseconds Across Geographic Locations
MWN-AI** Summary
Microchip Technology has unveiled its revolutionary SkyWire™ technology, embedded in the BlueSky™ Firewall 2200, designed to enhance the precision alignment of clocks across vast geographic distances. As the backbone of critical infrastructure—from data centers to air traffic control—the need for accurate time synchronization is paramount. With SkyWire, operators can achieve an unprecedented level of clock alignment and verification to within nanoseconds, even among distant clocks, a feat traditionally reserved for metrology labs and scientific institutions.
The new technology is essential for sectors like power utilities and financial services, where timing accuracy is crucial for operational integrity. Microchip's solution not only enables these industries to access Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) for their timing networks but also builds a robust infrastructure for reliable and resilient clock architectures. Randy Brudzinski, Microchip's corporate vice president for frequency and timing systems, emphasizes that SkyWire broadens access to UTC, facilitating the independent measurement and verification of clock deployments worldwide.
Originating from the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Time Measurement and Analysis Service (TMAS), SkyWire aligns with NIST's goals of providing accurate time for national infrastructure. With the integration of the BlueSky GNSS Firewall 2200 and SkyWire technology, organizations can effortlessly connect with the TMAS Data Service for large-volume clock systems.
Additionally, nations can implement similar solutions through Microchip’s TimePictra® software suite, empowering metrology labs and enterprises to conduct traceable time measurement independently. As a key player with over 75 years of experience in timing solutions, Microchip continues to provide trusted and resilient technologies critical to the global infrastructure.
MWN-AI** Analysis
Microchip Technology's recent launch of the SkyWire™ technology, embedded in the BlueSky™ Firewall 2200, marks a significant advancement in time synchronization for critical infrastructure sectors. This technology allows for clock alignment and verification within nanoseconds across great distances, a breakthrough that can transform operations in data centers, financial institutions, and utilities.
As the demand for precision in timing systems escalates—especially in fields such as transportation and telecommunications—SkyWire offers a robust solution that enhances reliability and reduces risks associated with timing discrepancies. The technology leverages existing NIST services and provides a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) product that supports large-scale clock deployments, thereby enhancing accessibility to authoritative time sources like Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
From a market perspective, companies operating in sectors that rely on stringent timing accuracy, such as fintech, aviation, and utilities, could see significant operational enhancements by adopting this technology. The ability for independent verification against UTC promotes confidence in transactional systems and time-sensitive data applications, positioning Microchip as a vital partner across industries.
Investors should closely monitor how Microchip leverages this technology in its product portfolio and its potential to capture market share among enterprises seeking to upgrade their timing systems. The expansion of operations utilizing SkyWire technology could lead to increased sales and bolster Microchip’s competitive position. Additionally, as this technology can be adopted globally, it presents a vast addressable market that could drive significant revenue growth.
Given Microchip’s established history in timing solutions, combined with innovative offerings such as SkyWire, the stock (Nasdaq: MCHP) may present a compelling buy for investors looking for exposure to tech-driven infrastructure advancements. Continued investment in research and development within this arena will be crucial for maintaining market leadership and capturing future growth opportunities.

CHANDLER, Ariz., Oct. 15, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Network clocks are the backbone of critical infrastructure operations, with the precise alignment of clocks becoming increasingly important for data centers, power utilities, wireless and wireline networks and financial institutions. For critical infrastructure operators to deploy timing architectures with reliability and resiliency, their clocks and timing references must be measured and verified to an authoritative time source such as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Microchip Technology (Nasdaq: MCHP) today announces its new SkyWire™ technology , a time measurement tool embedded in the BlueSky™ Firewall 2200, that is designed to measure, align and verify time to within nanoseconds even when clocks are long distances apart.
With the BlueSky GNSS Firewall 2200 and SkyWire technology, geographically dispersed timing systems can be compared to each other and compared to the time scale systems deployed at metrology labs within nanoseconds. Measurement of clock alignment and traceability to this level has typically only been done between metrology labs and scientific institutes. With Microchip’s solution, critical timing networks for air traffic control, transportation, public utilities and financial services can achieve alignment within nanoseconds between its clocks to protect their infrastructure no matter where the clocks are located.
“To ensure timing systems are delivering to stringent accuracy requirements, it’s important to measure and verify in an independent manner relative to UTC as managed by national laboratories and traceable to the Bureau International Poids et Mesures (BIPM),” said Randy Brudzinski, corporate vice president of Microchip’s frequency and timing systems business unit. “With the new SkyWire technology solution, we’re making UTC more widely accessible so that large deployments of clocks can be independently measured and verified against each other across long distances.”
The concept originated as an extension to the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST’s) pre-existing service called Time Measurement and Analysis Service (TMAS), which is utilized by entities that are required to maintain an accurate local time standard. The BlueSky GNSS Firewall 2200 with SkyWire technology provides a Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) product to enable critical infrastructure operators to connect with the NIST TMAS Data Service for large-volume clock deployments.
“At NIST, our goal is to enable the most accurate time to support our country’s infrastructure,” said, Andrew Novick, engineer at NIST. “Our TMAS Data Service in conjunction with commercial hardware, provides a scalable solution for anyone who needs traceable and accurate timing.”
Nations around the globe can replicate this solution using Microchip’s SkyWire technology capabilities within its TimePictra ® software suite, which delivers similar features and functionality as that provided by the NIST TMAS Data Service. Metrology labs, government agencies and enterprises worldwide can deploy TimePictra software suite and the BlueSky GNSS Firewall 2200 with SkyWire technology and have their own end-to-end solution for traceable time measurement, alignment and verification.
With over 75 years of timing experience, Microchip offers a comprehensive clock and timing portfolio. The company’s frequency and timing products range from small plug-in timing server cards to multi-rack national time scale systems. As a primary contributor to the world's time, Microchip's timing solutions are trusted, reliable and resilient. For more information, visit Microchip's Clock and Timing Systems web page .
