The first thing to understand about your portfolio is that the numbers on the right-hand side of your statement, listing the current value of stocks, bonds, and other assets, do not actually sum up to what you would realize if you sold them. They actually overstate the value of your holdings, possibly by a very large amount. The amount will vary widely depending upon the amount of time you have held your assets (most likely stocks) and the level of success you have had with stock selection. Long term success produces a portfolio with long-term capital gains taxes embedded in the stock price, which will have to be paid when you sell. The amount you must pay, of course, depends upon your tax bracket, federal and state. You must also consider your age and the probable amount of time before you need to realize cash or pass the stock over to an heir....
