My last analysis of Simpson Manufacturing Co., Inc. ( SSD ) was written almost 2 years ago, long before Trump’s tariffs. At that juncture, I concluded that despite the company’s strong fundamentals, it lacked a sufficient margin of safety due to high reinvestment needs and cyclical revenue drivers.
In this update, I re-examine SSD within the context of a mature wood-frame construction sector. This is a sector where long-term demand typically grows at mid–single-digit rates. Against this backdrop, SSD competes as a high-ROIC structural connector specialist. Its performance is shaped by the housing cycle, steel cost movements, and acquisition-driven expansion. Because sector growth is modest, durable competitive advantages—not industry tailwinds—will ultimately determine its long-term economics....
