You've heard it time and time again: max out your 401k and traditional IRA if you qualify, followed by possibly your HSA. All of these are pre-tax, tax-deferred accounts, avoiding tax now, anticipating a lower tax rate in retirement. Then there are the proponents of paying tax now. They will say to only contribute to a Roth and avoid taxes altogether in retirement. Congress will raise taxes in the future. The US is too indebted not to.
