- Amazon ( NASDAQ: AMZN ) will cease paying developers to create apps for its Alexa digital voice assistant, Bloomberg reported.
- Payments will stop at the end of June, the news outlet reported , citing a notice from Amazon to developers who are a part of the Alexa Developer Rewards Program. Amazon had been paying developers to create Alexa apps since 2017.
- “Developers like you have and will play a critical role in the success of Alexa and we appreciate your continued engagement,” the notice said.
- Alexa powers many of Amazon's devices, including its Fire TV devices and Kindle tablets and e-readers.
- Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.
- Developers will still be able to monetize apps via in-app purchases, similar to how iOS and Android developers generate revenue.
- Separately, Amazon said it will no longer free credits for developers of Alexa apps for Amazon Web Services.
- Amazon shares fell fractionally in early trading on Wednesday.
