LMT - Air Force said to end Lockheed's hypersonic weapon system

2023-03-29 17:28:35 ET

The Air Force isn’t planning to advance the hypersonic weapons system being developed by Lockheed Martin as military officials favor a program by Raytheon Technologies ( NYSE: RTX ), Bloomberg News reported.

While the Air Force isn’t going to pursue follow-on procurement of the Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW), it will proceed with two more flight tests to gather data, Andrew Hunter, assistant secretary for acquisition at the Air Force, said to a House Armed Services subcommittee on Wednesday.

Hunter’s commentary comes a day after an Air Force official told lawmakers that a March 13 test of the ARRW wasn’t successful. The service is more committed to the Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile (HACM), Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall told the House Appropriations Committee’s defense panel during a hearing on Tuesday about the fiscal 2024 budget request.

Raytheon last year received a contract from the Air Force to develop and demonstrate prototypes of the HACM.
