Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits is reportedly being probed by the Federal Trade Commission over how wine and liquor are priced and sold around the country. Sources told Politico that the FTC is investigating the nation's largest wine and spirits distributor for possible violations of the Robinson-Patman Act, which prohibits suppliers from offering better prices to large retail chains that are not offered to smaller competitors. The FTC is also looking into if Southern Glazer has been using unfair, deceptive or anti-competitive business practices. Southern Glazer generates about $25B in revenue a year and is one of the 11th largest privately held company in the U.S.
The FTC has not commented on the investigation or if it could expand to other larger players in the industry.
