BNGO - Bionano highlights OGM's potential in analyzing inherited eye disorders

• Life sciences company Bionano Genomics ( NASDAQ: BNGO ) announced Thursday a study publication demonstrating the use of optical genome mapping (OGM) to identify certain genetic changes that can lead to inherited retinal diseases (IRDs).
• IRDs represent a clinically and genetically different group of eye disorders that can cause severe vision loss or even blindness.
• Bionano ( BNGO ) markets the Saphyr system that uses OGM technology to conduct genome analysis and understand genetic changes called structural variations ((SVs)).
• The researchers at Radboud University Medical Center conducted the study to determine if OGM could enhance SV detection in genetically unexplained IRDs.
• According to the company, the study has identified several disease-causing SVs that next-generation sequencing (NGS) has missed in the initial genome analyses.
• “We believe this study underscores the importance of OGM as an integral part of genome analysis, especially in complex disorders where it can aid in discovering new variants and validating the findings of other methods,” Chief Executive of Bionano ( BNGO ) Erik Holmlin remarked.
