PSNY - China's Geely launches its first EV pickup truck 'Radar' linked up to recreational demand

Chinese automaker Zhejiang Geely Holding ( OTCPK:GELYF ) + 1.5% makes its new electric vehicle pickup truck official on Tuesday, buzzing around for its look learning a lot from Ford F-150.

The launch comes under the new brand, RADAR, at an online event where the automaker showcased its first pickup model called RD6 -positioned as China's first electric outdoor lifestyle vehicle as it targets the growing demand from city residents for camping and other recreational use, especially in the times of coronavirus restrictions.

It follows the rumors percolating since Nov 2021 betting Geely to release its all-new electric pickup lineup while the first shot of spy shots were leaked online at the start of this year only.

The Volvo ( OTCPK:VOLAF ) parent told the electric truck would have a driving range of more than 600 km (370 miles) per charge and is built on the same SEA platform that underpins Geely's Zeekr 001, Lotus' 600 among others.

However, the selling price of the vehicle is still not disclosed.

"In an optimistic estimation, the annual sales of pickup trucks can reach 3 million units in China by 2030," CEO of RADAR Ling Shiquan told Reuters expressing views on future outlook as pickups are still banned from most China's urban roads.

Ling added Geely aims to start offering the RD6 to Chinese consumers in the fourth quarter.

Radar is established as a subsidiary of Geely's pickup truck business, adding up to more than 10 passenger vehicle brands Geely already owns that includes Zeekr and Polester ( PSNY ).
