CNNWF - Disney's 'Encanto' sings its way to top of Thanksgiving box office
A long weekend offered movies what they needed to push the box office over $100 million in total again, and Disney (DIS -0.1%) responded as expected, with its Encanto taking top receipts with $40.3 million. The new film from Disney animation had targeted $40 million over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday after a Wednesday release. On a four-day basis (Thursday-Sunday) it grossed $32.8 million, and the three-day weekend haul (Friday-Sunday) was $27 million. In all three measures it was just slightly better than Ghostbusters: Afterlife (SONY +0.5%), which grossed $35.3 million over the five days in its second weekend in theaters. Overall, North American box office cleared $131.8 million for the five-day measure (it also topped $108 million for the four days, and $92.6 million just counting Friday-Sunday).
