OUST - Hesai pushes back on Ouster patent infringement complaint

Hesai ( NASDAQ: HSAI ) issued a strongly-worded response after being accused of patent infringement by Ouster ( NYSE: OUST ).

The initial complaint filed last week alleged the Shanghai-based company unlawfully imported LiDAR sensors that “infringe on five valid and enforceable patents owned by Ouster relating to lidar technology.” The complaint adds that Hesai ( HSAI ) has a history of infringement and has settled similar disputes with Ouster-acquisition Velodyne Lidar (VLDR).

However, the Chinese company responded on Monday, declaring that it “disputes Ouster’s allegations of patent infringement and will vigorously defend itself against such allegations.” The response adds that Hesai owns hundreds of patents and abides by IP rights and regulations.

“We believe Ouster’s complaints are deeply flawed and lack merit. We invest heavily in proprietary research and development,” Hesai CEO Yifan (David) Li commented. “We have more than 700 staff working in our R&D and manufacturing teams. We also regard our own trademarks, patents, domain names, trade secrets, proprietary technologies, and similar intellectual property as critical to our success.”

Shares of Hesai ( HSAI ) rose 5.45% on Monday while Ouster ( OUST ) stock edged 1.01% lower.
