SNDL - Marijuana bill removes cannabis as controlled substance moves regulation to FDA other agencies
strelov/iStock via Getty Images A draft version of a bill that would legalize marijuana on the federal level would remove cannabis from the federal list of controlled substances, and move its regulation from the Drug Enforcement Administration, Marijuana Moment reports. Instead, the FDA, along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau would have regulatory authority. The proposed legislation would also expunge criminal records related to marijuana possession, allow states to continue their own marijuana policies, and remove collateral consequences such as immigration-related repercussions, according to Marijuana Moment. A federal tax on marijuana is also part of the bill, though the funds raised from it would go to grant programs to support people from communities impacted by the war on drugs who want to take a part in the cannabis industry. A public comment period is open until September 1.
