2023-03-30 11:18:45 ET

Nine soldiers were killed when two helicopters collided during training exercises near the border of Kentucky and Tennessee on Wednesday night, the U.S. Army said Thursday.

The HH-60 Black Hawk assault helicopters crashed into each other at about 10 p.m. in Trigg County, Kentucky, an Army spokesperson said in a statement. The crash is under investigation.

The helicopters were from the 101st Airborne Division, which is based at Fort Campbell. The group is the Army’s sole air-assault division.

Black Hawk helicopters are made by Sikorsky Aircraft, a unit of defense contractor Lockheed Martin ( NYSE: LMT ).
