UNP - North America rail traffic down 4.4% as Canada braces more heavy rain
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reports total weekly US rail traffic down 4.5% Y/Y to 1,945,826 carloads and intermodal units for the week ending November 27, 2021. Carloads up 2% to 17,996; intermodal volume down 9.6% to 1,028,039 containers and trailers when compared to the same period last year. 12 of the 20 carload commodity groups posted an increase, including coal up 8.6%; chemicals up 4.4%; and crushed stone, sand & gravel up 7.4%. Commodity groups that posted decline included motor vehicles & parts, down 14.1%; grain down 7.4%; and all other carloads down 14.6%. For the first 47 weeks of 2021, U.S. rail traffic increased 6.7% to 23,792,101 carloads and intermodal units. Overall, North American rail volume for the week ending November 27, 2021, on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads, totalled 295,807 carloads, down 4.4% Y/Y.
