The U.S. Navy tomorrow will christen the USS Iowa, a Virginia-class fast-attack submarine, at a General Dynamics ( NYSE: GD ) shipyard in Groton, Connecticut.
The nuclear-powered, cruise-missile submarine will be tested at sea before being put into service. Its reactor and power unit were made at the Huntington Ingalls Industries ( HII ) shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. The reactor was designed to last for the submarine's entire lifespan of more than 30 years without refueling.
The Navy designated former Iowa First Lady Christie Vilsack as the ship’s sponsor. She will break a bottle of sparkling wine over the submarine's bow at a ceremony that starts at 10 a.m. ET., according to an announcement.
General Dynamics Electric Boat, a unit of the defense contractor, last month was awarded a $1.08 billion contract modification for Virginia-class submarines.
