COM - U.S.-owned cargo ship reportedly struck by missile off the coast of Yemen - CNBC

2024-01-15 11:40:06 ET

An U.S.-owned cargo ship was reportedly struck by a missile off the coast of Yemen, reported CNBC on Monday, citing an update from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) organization.

The UKMTO said authorities were investigating the incident, the report said, adding that the U.S.-owned bulk carrier was said to have been transiting in the westbound lane of the International Recommended Transit Corridor, a shipping route through the Gulf of Aden. However, the missile reportedly caused a fire in a hold, but no injuries were reported.

The incident, which occurred southeast of Aden in Yemen as per CNBC, comes after U.S. and U.K. retaliated against Houthi rebels in Yemen for attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

The allies launched airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, while the Houthis vowed more ship attacks, potentially engulfing the Middle East region into a wider conflict. The tension has led to a gain in oil prices as tankers diverted course from the Red Sea since the strikes.

Qatar has suspended liquefied natural gas shipments via the Red Sea and six more oil tankers changed direction as disruption to the crucial trade route extended to the energy sector

Oil has been largely muted to the rising Middle East tensions, based on the plentiful supply . Crude Oil Futures ( CL1:COM ) are down 0.82% at $72.09.
