LMT - U.S. said to consider sending long-range missiles to Ukraine

The United States has weighed whether to approve a long-range missile system for Ukraine that would give the country the ability to strike Russian targets far behind the front lines of battlefields, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing officials familiar with the matter.

The Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, made by Lockheed Martin ( NYSE: LMT ) has a range of about 190 miles and can be fired from a wheeled High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS.

President Biden hasn’t given final approval on the transfer, partly because U.S. officials don’t want the war to escalate if Ukraine were to attack Russian territory. However, the recent internal turmoil in Russia may provide an opening to strengthen Ukraine’s fighting ability, the Journal reported.

Last weekend, the founder of the Wagner mercenary force staged a short-lived mutiny against the Russian military. The mercenaries advanced within 125 miles of Moscow, and shot down half a dozen Russian military helicopters and an airborne command post before standing down.
