UNP - U.S. weekly rail traffic jumps 3.4% year-over-year

- The Association of American Railroads [AAR] reported on Wednesday that for the week ending November 11, 2023, U.S. rail traffic was 497,348 carloads and intermodal units, up 3.4% year-over-year.
- Total carloads for the week rose 2.3% to 233,745 carloads, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 263,603 containers and trailers, rising 4.4%.
- Seven of the 10 carload commodity groups posted a year-over-year increase for the week. They included coal, motor vehicles and parts, and metallic ores and metals.
- Commodity groups that fell year-over-year for the week included nonmetallic minerals, farm products excl. grain, and food, and chemicals.
- North American rail volume for the week, on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads was 347,446 carloads, up 4.5% year-over-year, and 345,647 intermodal units, up 3.2%.
- Canadian railroads reported 96,878 carloads for the week, up 6.9%, and 69,605 intermodal units, down 5.9%.
- Mexican railroads reported 16,823 carloads for the week, up 25.9%, and 12,439 intermodal units, up 45.5%.
