EXPR - Wayfair leads strong day for retail as January sales reads blaze strong
The retailer sector is not suffering from any post-holiday hangover with solid gains across the sector.In an interesting reveal, Gordon Haskett analyst Chuck Grom points to accelerating growth in average basket sizes for consumers in January compared to December. Retailer with the biggest jumps in basket size include Dollar Tree (DLTR) +35.2% Y/Y from +17.5%, Ross Stores (ROST) +39.6% from +22.1% and BJ's Wholesale Club Holdings (BJ) +26.6% from +14.8%. Jumping to online retail, Grom says Wayfair ([[W]] +7.9%) has seen surging checkout domain growth trends this month, up +141% through January 11 vs. +93% in December and +70% in November. Importantly, checkouts have good directional correlation with U.S. sales."We think Holiday 2020 will ultimately be described as one of the best in the past decade and 'U' shaped with a strong finish towards the end of the month of December.
