Sony Group Corp. (NYSE:SNE) has reportedly been targeted in a substantial ransomware attack, allegedly orchestrated by a newly surfaced group on the dark web.
What Happened: Ransomed.vc, a fresh entity operating on the dark web, claims to have hacked into all Sony systems. The group, interestingly, functions as both a ransomware operator and a ransomware-as-a-service provider, reported VGC.
This group, reported to be operating from Russia and Ukraine, is allegedly working in alignment with the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and various other data privacy laws. They pinpoint vulnerabilities in company systems and report violations of these laws, supposedly using them as a tool to coerce victims into compliance, as stated by Cyber Security Connect.
Sony has not yet made a public statement regarding the breach or the extent of the impact caused by Ransomed.vc on the company.
