- The program comes as a New Zealand law comes into effect that mandates lower nicotine content.
- The company said that its reduced nicotine tobacco seed grows product with 95% less nicotine than the other tobaccos used for cigarettes for the New Zealand market.
- The country is requiring that nicotine in combustible cigarettes have less than 0.8 mg of nicotine per gram of tobacco.
- Accelerating the project will produce enough seed to grow tobacco for ~2B sticks, an amount equivalent to the entire consumption of cigarettes in New Zealand annually.
