Adidas (OTCMKTS: ADDYY) announced a new “name, image and likeness” network for student-athletes at NCAA Division 1 Adidas-sponsored schools. Through the program, over 50,000 student-athletes across 23 sports within 109 schools, will qualify to become paid affiliate brand ambassadors for Adidas, regardless of their gender.
“Open to all eligible student-athletes regardless of their gender, the Adidas NIL network embodies our belief that sport has the power to change lives by upskilling athletes and giving them the ability to begin to experience an entrepreneurial path that will carry them beyond their college years,” said Jim Murphy, Adidas NCAA program lead.
According to Adidas, the program will launch in phases throughout the next 12 months and is in line with the brands’ goal to boost inclusivity and equality. The program will begin with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) as well as Power-5 conference partners in the fall of 2022.
“At Adidas, we are committed to creating change through sport and recognize the important role student-athletes play in shaping the future,” said Adidas North American president Rupert Campbell. “Our groundbreaking NIL program advances our commitments toward building inclusivity in sport and inspires athletes to realize a more equitable world. I can’t wait to see it come to life.”
The company has yet to disclose how much the student-athletes will be compensated if they decided to take part in the program. The participants will be paid a percentage of the sales they push to adidas.com or the Adidas app, and will also have the opportunity to be paid per social media post.
