American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL) has opted to end service in three cities this fall amid a shortage of pilots within the industry. The move is the latest of many disruptions within the airline industry as cancellations and schedule cuts continue to occur.
“We’re extremely grateful for the care and service our team members provided to our customers in Islip, Ithaca, and Toledo, and are working closely with them during this time,” the spokesperson said in an email to The Hill. “We’ll proactively reach out to customers scheduled to travel after this date to offer alternate arrangements.”
According to an airline spokesperson, the company will be terminating service to Toledo, Ohio; Ithaca, New York.; and Islip, New York, on Sept. 7 . The carrier revealed that it is actively contacting customers that are scheduled to travel after the set date to offer other alternatives.
Travel demand has surged for both leisure and business purposes, but airlines continue to struggle to maintain adequate staffing levels and meet demand. Airlines such as Delta, JetBlue, Alaska, Lufthansa, and British Airways have also cut their summer schedules amid the current challenges. Thousands of US flights were either delayed or canceled throughout the Juneteenth and Father’s Day weekend.
